The fifth and final race of the 2011 CalCup Formula Windsurfing Racing Series wrapped up in spectacular fashion this past Saturday September 17th at Berkeley’s infamous pebble carpet.(pictured Tom Purcell/all photos credited Lyrah Colvin)
I was bummed this year to not be able to be a part of the action due to some life trade-offs I made with my wife and it was a bad year to be on the sidelines. With consistent 20mph plus winds at every race, a super professional race committee, perfectly set courses, and economical entry fees the CalCup series is hands down the best windsurfing course racing series in the US.
The final day of racing saw, as usual solid wind dropping off only during the last race of the day. This year’s CalCup fleet has seen the emergence of the youth. At times some of the Juniors, with Jack Lundquist (pictured above) leading the way were rocking larger sails then the adults.
Xavier Ferlet (pictured below) made the trip up from LA to defend his 2010 season title and did so with relative ease. Ferlet swept all 5 races on the day with Tom Purcell at times pressing him but to no avail. Jack Lundquist also put up a perfect scoring line with 5 bullets of his own to take the day.
As for the season series it was never in much doubt with Ferlet only dropping one of the 5 days as he successfully defended his title. Jack Lundquist did him one better though over in the B Fleet putting up victories across all 5 race days.
The 2012 Season for CalCup will be back better than ever so if you’re planning on being in the Bay Area make sure to put a CalCup race on your calendar. For more information Click here.
Special thanks to all the Volunteers who make it happen at CalCup but most imporantly to Mike Percey for all his efforts to keep the stoke going.
