Brazilian Formula Nationals Report
19th-22nd of September
Ricardo Conde, who was recently FW vice-world super master champion in Estonia, had been working hard all year in organizing the Brazilian Formula nationals in his home town of Guarapari, situated in the State of Espirito Santo (just North of Rio de Janeiro). His main concerned was with the wind, as this time of the year you can get a cold front coming in, which can cause the wind to shut down for a few days…
Around 60 sailors from all over Brazil came down for the nationals, which made up one of the strongest fleet we ever had in recent years. Most competitors came a few days before to train and during those days, the wind proved it wasn’t going to disappoint us.
The first day of competition we did two races in strong winds gusting up to 25knots with most sailors using 10.0 or smaller. On the second day, the wind became even stronger and it was blowing like crazy, with gusts hitting up to 33 knots registered on land, probably more at sea. We manage to do one race and for security reasons were sent back to the club, I was on a 9.0 and hardly ever had raced on conditions this strong.
After checking the weather forecast, which showed the same winds for the next 5 days, the race committee decided to start earlier and move the course further in the bay looking for lighter winds and less choppy seas. With this, we did 4 races on the third day and another 4 races on the last day of competition, completing a total of 11 races which gave us 3 discards.
Paulo dos Reis (Paulao) BRA 3333, managed the conditions perfectly and won the event with 9 bullets, making it his 4th FW national title. I, Wilhelm Schurmann, BRA999, came in second, followed by the young sixteen years old, Gabriel Browne (Biel) BRA 50 who also took the youth. The fourth place was a close fight, with Fabio Melo BRA74 taking the edge, followed by Lucas Fiuza BRA 25 in 5th. Results bellow.
In the Masters, Luiz Fernando (Urubu) BRA100 took the honors. The Grand Master went to Ricardo Conde BRA8 and the Super Master to Marcelo Lacerda.
In the Junior, Mateus Ghannam Issac BRA 767, soon of the experienced Aberto Issac, took the title beating some good sailors double his size on the Sport category, which was won by Felipe Olheiro who took bullets on all races. In the women, Monica Veras came first.
After a super dinner, price given and a honoring for sailors that have made a difference in the sports in the last 20 years or more, we all headed to Lua Azul night club for a fantastic party.
The event was superbly organized and nothing was forgotten.
