Saturday, September 20th, the start of de 14th Race around Texel for windsurfers (not to be mixed up with the famous catmaran-race around the island) is planned to take place. In Europe this event is the heaviest windsurfing race to be sailed. After a stretch over the North Sea, the participants have to deal with the severe conditions of the sea between the islands of Texel and Vlieland and the shallowness of the Waddensea. And if that is yet not enough, there is also the chance of changes in wind force and flow which sometimes make a change of equipment necessary.

Last years winner was Ramses Landman followed by Dennis Littel and Adri Keet. Since 1994 the record of the Texel Race stands in name of Ron Ruiter with a time of 1:53 hour. Dependent on the wind conditions we think it’s about time the record will be beaten this year.

Because of the heaviness of the race and the safety measurements within the scope of it, the race is not meant to be sailed by everyone. According to a certain procedure the Dutch top 50 of windsurfers will be invited for participation. The organisation has extra places for foreign topsurfers.

The race will start Saturday, September 20th at 12 o’clock from “Paal 9”, near by Den Hoorn. The opening ceremony will take place at 11 o’clock by he mayor of Texel. After the opening the skippersmeeting will take place. Dependent on the wind- and weather conditions, the participants will finish a few hours later at “Paal 9”, where a warm welcome will wait for them.

Next to the Texel Race there will also be kiteboard- and wavesailing competitions. Action guaranteed!
