EC Cagliari/Sardinia (Italy):

After four races with one discard Italy’s number one Andrea Cucchi was able to win the Windsurfing Euro-Cup Cagliari/Sardinia. He has won two races and scored a second and a third. This adds up to a total of 4 points which gives him a clear lead ahead of Michal Polanowski who scored one victory, one third place and a fourth giving him 8 points. Only one point behind we can find Roy van Koolwijk. The Dutch Fanatic rider celebrates his best result so far. The big favourite Wojtek Brzozowski from Poland dropped down to the fourth position with 11 points while Aleks Grynis (POL-86, Starboard, Neil Pryde) was happy with his fifth position (15 points).

In the women’s fleet the favourite Dorota Staszewska took advantage out of the absence of her main opponents Christine Becker, Christine Johnston and Lucy Horwood and managed to score four bullets in four races giving her a total of 3 points. So she is clear ahead of Verena Fauster who is second with 6 points and Margit Germany with 9 points.

In the manufacturers ranking boards Starboard was able to win with points from Andrea Cucchi (120), Michal Polanowski (119) and Wojtek Brzozowski (117). With a total of 356 points Starboard is slightly ahead of Fanatic who scored with Roy van Koolwijk (118), Ben van der Steen (115) and Steve Allen (114) giving them 347 points. The third place was won by F2 with points from their new teamrider Devon Boulon (ISV-1, F2, Windwing, 111 points), Giuseppe Pugliese (ITA-445, F2, Gaastra , 99 points) and Davide Beverino (ITA-89, F2, Gaastra, 98 points) which added up to 308 points.

In the manufacturers ranking sails Neil Pryde continued its dominance with all the top seven riders using their sails! They are scoring with Andrea Cucchi (120), Michal Polanowski (119) and Roy van Koolwijk (118) and achieve the maximum of 357 points. Gaastra is still suffering from its lack of top level competitors and scores with Ross Williams (GBR-83, Starboard, Gaastra, 112 points), Natale Francesco (ITA-417, Fanatic, Gaastra, 109 points) and David McInnes (NZL-67, Fanatic, Gaastra, 106 points) and has a total of 327 points. YES Sails was able to deliver a strong impression in their home base and scored with their youngster Alberto Menegatti (ITA-456, Starboard, YES Sails, 113 points) who was able to win the first race, sail designer Peter Munzlinger (ITA-200, Starboard, YES Sails, 91 points) and Mauro Covre (ITA-8, Starboard, YES Sails, 88 points). This resulted in the total of 292 points.

The Windsurfing Euro-Cup Cagliari/Sardinia was again a big success for the most important windsurfing racing series of the world. The competitors enjoyed the incredible Mediteranean atmosphere and the perfect hospitality of the people from Sardinia. Many have extended their trip for some holyday and brought their friends to share the experience with them. A spectacular show was presented for the media and the spectators. Thousands of people followed the competition online. Mostly over the official EC Website www.euro-cup.org and the FW Class Website www.formulawindsurfing.org. But many other pages covered the event additionally. Several international Magazines will report over the Windsurfing Euro-Cup event in Cagliari/Sardinia.

The next Windsurfing Euro-Cup will take place in Cascais/Lisbon from June 5th to June 8th. Then the action will take place on the Atlantic Ocean in the direct neighbourhood of the capital of Portugal in front of the famous Casino of Estoril. EC Cascais/Lisbon (Portugal):

The Fanatic top rider Steve Allen (AUS-0, Fanatic, Neil Pryde) stepped on the top of the podium at the Windsurfing Euro-Cup in Cascais. The Euro-Cup Champion of 2002 was enthusiastic about his first victory in the 2003 season. The Australian was able to win two races and scored two second places. In the end he had a total of 9,4 points which gives him a clear lead in front of the new star in the Starboard team Michal Polanowski (POL-16, Starboard, Neil Pryde) on the second place. The Polish youngster was able to win the final race and present a consistent performance over the whole regatta. In the end he had 14,7 points giving him a 2-point lead in front of Fanatics “wild animal” Pieter Bijl (NED-0, Fanatic, Neil Pryde) with 16,7 points. The Dutch windsurfing maniac was able to win one race and finished three times on the third place.

On the fourth place followed the “baby” in the Starboard team Alberto Menegatti (ITA-456, Starboard, YES Sails, 22,0 points). The top racer of YES Sails confirmed the strong impression from the last Euro-Cup event in Cagliari/Sardinia and underlined the intention to step out of the shadow of his mentor and Italian Champion Andrea Cucchi. He was getting stronger and stronger over the regatta and a victory in one race was only prevented by a rope in the water which made him make a spectacular catapult. The fifth position was won by Aleks Grynis (POL-86, Starboard, Neil Pryde, 24,7 points) who was also able to win one race and recovered strongly after a terrible start into the regatta.

In the Boards Manufacturers Ranking we saw an exciting head to head fight between Fanatic and Starboard. After two Starboard victories at the last two events Fanatic was able to triumph this time. But it was super tight between the two global players in the racing scene. In the end Fanatic won with 353 points provided by Steve Allen, Pieter Bijl and Ben van der Steen (NED-57, Fanatic, Neil Pryde). Only one point behind is Starboard with a total of 352 points won by Michal Polanowski, Alberto Menegatti and Aleks Grynis. The third position was won by F2 whose efforts in the Euro-Cup pay of now. Their new “baby” Devon Boulon (ISV-1, F2, Windwing) was the top scorer with a ninth place in the strong fleet.

In the Sails Manufacturers Ranking we saw again a domination of Neil Pryde. 7 out of the top-10 racers are using Neil Pryde sails. Only YES sails was able to break into the top-5 Neil Pryde phalanx with their racer Alberto Menegatti. The maximum of 357 points from Steve Allen, Michal Polanowski and Pieter Bijl granted Neil Pryde a comfortable lead ahead of Gaastra with 331 points. Gaastra is still suffering from a significant lack of top racers using their sails. Their “strongest weapon” Ross Williams (GBR-83, Starboard, Gaastra) was only able to get eighth after a strong second place after the first day. The other Gaastra top racers were not able to save the score for their brand. The third position was won by YES sails who are establishing themselves more and more as one of the top brands for competitive sails.

The Windsurfing Euro-Cup Cascais/Lisbon (Portugal) was another jewel in the crown for the most important windsurfing racing series of the world. The competitors enjoyed the unique atmosphere at the most western area of the European continent and the perfect hospitality of the Portuguese people. A spectacular show was presented for the media and the spectators. Thousands of people followed the competition online. Mostly over the official EC Website www.euro-cup.org and the FW Class Website www.formulawindsurfing.org. But many other pages covered the event additionally. Several international Magazines will report over the Windsurfing Euro-Cup event in Cascais/Lisbon.

EC Paros – A great new venue on the EC tour 2003:

We are happy to present an additional great event for the Euro-Cup tour 2003. In the beginning of September the Euro-Cup will visit Greece for the first time. The venue is Paros which is famous for its perfect windsurfing conditions. The regatta will take place from the 4th to the 8th of September. Paros has already been the host for several great international events and we are looking forward to some spectacular races in the Mediterranean Sea. We will present more information as soon as possible.

Theo Fisilanis (local organizer):

“Thank you very much for the opportunity to hold the Euro-Cup event on Paros. I will do all I can to make the race successful and to make people comfortable. I have raced before and hosted events before and I understand the need for a high-quality and professionally run event. I have spoken with local government agencies and they are eager to cooperate with the organization and support for an event here. I am confident we can host a great event. We have past success at doing so; many racers are happy to come to Paros and the local community offers fine hospitality.

Best Regards,Theo (Sun Wind Surf Center)”

Yiannis Rangoussis (Mayor of Paros):

“We are proud and happy to host the Euro-Cup Windsurfing event here on Paros 4 – 8 of September. We will support Mr. Fisilianis of Sun Wind Surf Club in his endeavours to host a successful and well run event. We believe the islands location and notoriety as a windsurfing destination as well as the hospitality of the local inhabitants who run our tourist trade will combine to make a high quality race here…
