Over 50 competitors have showed up for the 2003 Formula Class National Titles in Australia. The Third event in a row from the East Coast Triple crown tour. Most sailors traveling down from the Sail Melbourne event and coming across the famous Bass Strait on the Spirit of Tasmania car ferry, all said it was a pleasant trip without too much sea action. Today in Hobart the winds were blowing a good 20 knots, so it looks like the weather is setting up for a solid 4 days of racing which starts on Monday the 20th.
Tasmania alone has about 15 serious Formula sailors so it’s looks like they will be the strongest contention to take on the other top sailors from out of State. Included in the field is current Australian Champion Mike Nelson from NSW and Sam Parker also from NSW who is out to topple the current Champion. Local favourite Dave Moorehead will have a advantage with local knowledge, Dave grew up and sailed at Sandy Bay his whole life. Recent winner from the NSW states and Sail Melbourne regatta Phil McGain originally from Sydney, NSW, will also be competing. This is the first time Phil has competed in an Australian National Title event since his old windsurfer days in the early 80’s. Arriving from New Zealand is hotshot Dave Holt who’s enjoyed success this year at some International events, will also be one of the one’s to watch once the racing gets underway.
Stay tuned for continued reports.
