From the 23rd to 27th of July the International German Championships took place on Sylt within the Volvo Surf Cup 2014 presented by Flens. The event attracted over 60 competitors from seven different nations to compete over five days on the North Sea. At the end of the event, after nine exciting races, Vincent Langer (GER-1, RRD, Point-7) finished as the leader of a very strong group of participants. With this victory Langer defended his title as „German Windsurfing Champion 2014“.

The sportive part of the event was dominated by the discipline Formula Racing with nine races over the five days of the Volvo Surf Cup presented by Flens. The International German Championship became a platform for a well-known duell between two of the best windsurfers in Europe. Vincent Langer and Sebastian Kornum (DEN-24, JP, NeilPryde) had some hard fights on the water. From the beginning on Kornum showed his talent and tactical skills and decided the first races in his favor. After two races Kornum began running out of strength due to some kind of illness. In return Vincent Langer improved by changing material. This was obviously the right decision, Langer finished in lead of Kornum and Gunnar Asmussen (GER-88, Patrik, North) from Flensburg.

The victory of the Volvo Surf Cup and the International German Championship was as close and exciting as possible. Vincent Langer took over the lead from Sebastian Kornum with the victory in the last and ninth race of the event. In the Overall Ranking Langer scored 9,0 points, closely followed by Sebastian Kornum with 10,0 points.

Not less exciting was the fight for the third positon. Gunnar Asmussen, Fabian Mattes (GER-202, Tabou, GA-Sails) and Helge Wilkens (GER-63, Starboard, Severne) all together showed really good results througout the races. In the ninth race Gunnar Asmussen could finish in second position behind Vincent Langer which ensured him the third place (23,0 points) in the Overall Ranking. Fabian Mattes (27,0 points) and Helge Wilkens (32,0 points) complete the Top-5. Another Top-Surfer finished on sixth position. Ingmar Daldorf (NED-191) misses the Top-5 with just 2.0 points deficit.

Not just around the top, also in the different categories some surprisingly good results were noticed. Ulf Sjöstedt (SWE-8) from Sweden finished as „Best Grandmaster“ (over 45) on ninth position. He is followed by the 15-year old Martin Möller Hovda (NOR-41, Starboard, Severne) from Norway. It’s quite a sensation to have the „Best Junior“ (under 17) within the Top-10 of such a big event. The young german talent Jan-Moritz Bochnia (GER-9, F2, Point-7) finished at the 14th position and was rewarded as „Best Youth“ (under 19). „Best Woman“ in the by men dominated group of competitors became Andrea Vanhoorne (BEL-26, Patrik, Loft Sails) from Belgium. She reached the 30th place in the Overall Ranking. Leon Delle (GER-6) became „Best Rookie“ scoring 12th place at the Volvo Surf Cup presented by Flens in his first season competing in the German Windsurfing Series.

The hot summer and the event set up with lots of little stores, drink and delicious food stands attracted more than 120.000 spectators. They enjoyed watching the sport on the water, listening to the bands in the evenings or relaxing with a glas of wine while meeting the Windsurfstars on the promenade. The close and appreciating atmosphere makes the Volvo Surf Cup an unique experience for spectators and competitors.

The plans for the following year are already fixed. There will be the IFCA Slalom World Championships on Sylt within the Volvo Surf Cup 2015. Save the Date: From the 22nd to 26th of July the international Windsurf Elite will compete for the title „Slalom World Champion 2015“.
