During the racing on Day two, two of the riders (Wojtek Brzozowski andDave Morehead) were equipped with GPS tracking units during the racing. These units were adjusted and fitted specifically by the Race Director(Ian Fox, himself a world top 10 ranked GPS speed racer and Regionaltimekeeper for GPS racing in Australia) to ensure GPS functions, dataand information were not available to the riders whilst sailing (infact, Wojtek’s unit was taped completely over and located on the forwardsection of his mast above the boom). At the completion of the daysracing in the variety of wind and water conditions, it was possible toremove and download the data, verifying not only the course/s sailed bythe actual riders, but also their peak and average GPS speeds. For thoseinvolved in GPS timing, the settings used were basically as per www.gps-speedsurfing.com guidelines and procedures, which helps maintaincomparative data against other GPS times and speeds logged. Trackpointtiming intervals used were distance based at 10m. Wojtek’s data (mastmounted) was particularly clean and no spikes needed editing orcorrection. The data here is presented in both raw (PEAK) GPSinstantaneous speed file, plus the more averaged 10 second filter datacommonly used to discuss “average” top speeds. Because of chop, it isnot indicative of true maximum top speed of FW equipment, however it isindicative of typical best race speeds in open water environment in justabout the highest “practical” openwater FW windspeeds sailable.Equipment was Starboard F159 with Deboichet R13H, power by NP RS4 /9.8m. GPS timing with Garmin Foretrex 201’s. Software analysis byGARtrip and GPSAR.

Fawkner Beacon Wind Graph

Notes : This is a high accuracy meteorology meter located on a remote automatic weather station aprox 7 km’s directly DOWNWIND of the race course.

It’s in open water in the middle of the Bay, on a tower aprox 30m high. Figures from this station in the speed range 20-30 kts are adjusted DOWN by aprox 5 kts in that range for shoreline and sea level speeds in the Seabreeze (SSW- S- SE) direction.

So, the wind at the event site is aprox 5 kts BELOW the readings shown here.

!!!The grey background on the page masks the grey GUST (peak) trend line in the Wind trace!!!
