Over the bank holiday 24 – 26 May Christine raced to victory at the 2003 UKWA British Windsurfing Championships, held in Hove, East Sussex, giving her her first national champion title in the Formula Windsurfing class.
Brighton is Christine’s hometown, and she felt at home in light to moderate wind conditions, and at ease launching in the tricky Brighton shore break. Her best race was the first of the championship where she stayed in second position behind eventual overall winner of the men’s fleet Ross Williams for one lap, finally ending up in 5th position for that race. Christine finished an impressive 11th overall in the men’s fleet (out of 42 racers), and 2nd in the men’s 11 metre fleet (The maximum permissible sail size is 11 metres under Formula Class rules for women.)
This win came shortly after winning bronze at the Formula Windsurfing European Championships at the beginning of May, in Douarnenez, France.
Christine was planning to attend a European event in Cagliari, Sardinia this week, but a shortage of funds forced her to withdraw at the last minute. Cagliari is the venue for the 2003 Formula World Championships in October. Her next event will there fore be the next in the national series, The Welsh Racing Championships, in Pwelli, Wales in two weekends time.
Christine said of her win:
“ I’m very happy to have won my first national championship in the Formula Windsurfing Class. I felt very at home here in Hove. I am getting more and more tuned in to using my new equipment so I hope to be going even faster at the next event in Pwelli, Wales! ”
