Today is the inscription day at the Windsurfing Euro-Cup in Cagliari / Sardini (Italy). Some of the competitors are already here for a few days but the majority is arriving today or early tomorrow morning. For many competitors it wasn’t easy to come here as the flight schedule in Italy was disturbed a lot due to the NATO conference in Rome. No flights were allowed to and from Rome during the conference and many of the alternative flights were overbooked. I myself was stuck for eight hours on the airport of Milano. – No fun!
Some of the favorites like Steve Allen (AUS-0, Fanatic), Wojtek Brzozowski (POL-10, Starboard, Neil Pryde) and Italian Champion Andrea Cucchi are already here and had a perfect training session on the water. Everybody is unpacking, tuning, rigging… It is a nice and easy atmosphere. For Ben van der Steen the atmosphere isn’t that funny. He got hit by a flying fish at the FW European Championships at the foot which forced him to retire from the race. Now he got an infection at the wound and is forced to return home to recover as soon as possible. He has less then two weeks to return to 100 % to return to the first FW Grand Prix in Rhodes.
This event will bring a lot of changes to the Euro-Cup annual rankings as is the fourth regatta resulting in the first discard. So depending on the outcome there might be some bigger surprises.
Tomorrow we have inscription until 11:00, Skippersmeeting at 11:30 and the first possible start at 12:00. So return on Thursday to follow the live reports about the races in Sardinia
